"Inclusive play benefits all children, regardless of ability: It helps them develop a true and nuanced understanding of the world, to appreciate the differences between people and recognize the similarities that underlie them, to be tolerant of diversity and to accept others’ perspectives. By giving children with and without disabilities a chance to play together, inclusive play spaces can serve as joyful incubators of a more inclusive society, in which children with disabilities can participate equally and enjoy equal opportunities to flourish."
By creating a play space that includes a number of ADA accessible pieces, the Turtle Park Project seeks to renovate an important local park and to promote integration, collaboration, and friendships among our children. The natural play experience design will meet a multitude of social, emotional, sensory and physical fitness needs, encouraging children to learn from their own challenges and those of their peers.
The new equipment will allow all children to feel included, engaged, creative, independent, safe, and active during play. Our proposed design includes elements of traditional equipment as well as equipment that is designed for children that have extra physical, sensory, social, emotional, and cognitive needs and considerations.
The innovative playground design will not only greatly improve the utilization and aesthetic of the park, but will also benefit our Village and small business community. Parks enhance property values, increase municipal revenue, and attract homebuyers and merchants. Our hope is that the improvements will draw greater attention and foot traffic to Larchmont’s small business district, supporting our neighborhood shops and network.
The Turtle Park Project is also working with the Village to address safety concerns regarding pedestrians, traffic, and parking in and around the Turtle Park area.
